Frankly, My Dear…
“Ah, what the heck — the diet starts tomorrow!”
How many times have you been guilty of over-indulging because you treated yourself to something small, felt regret, made more really bad choices and felt defeat?
It is not the one drink, the two cookies, the bag of chips or the celebration party that torpedo’s your progress. It is your black-or-white, all-or-nothing thinking that is unbalanced. All is not lost if you get off track with a momentary lapse or choose to indulge with a treat or a meal. Own that decision and even enjoy the indulgence. But keep perspective.
It is a double whammy when you let guilt steal the enjoyment and then try to override the negative feelings with more food and go right back to the emotional eating that got you stuck to begin with. Be intentional and honest with yourself and don’t fall into the trap of ‘being healthy later’. Health is NOW. The choices you make now are the ones that matter.
Have realistic expectations of yourself. If your diet is so strict that a yummy Christmas treat flips a binging switch and turns you into Scarlett O’Hara, who will “think about that (diet) tomorrow”, we need to talk. Today.
