GLP-1
Mounjaro, Saxenda, semaglutide’s like Ozempic and Wegovy... the ads for these are everywhere. And the people I know who are on them look great. These glucagon-like peptide receptor agonists are doing their job; releasing insulin from the pancreas to regulate blood sugar. This essentially cuts the ‘’food noise’ and helps users consume less calories. Keeping in mind there are many reasons for not being on this medication long term, it is important to use the time you have on it to focus in on change and healthy habits that can support your good choices once GLP-1s are no longer available to you.
Many people discontinue the use of this powerful hormone for many reasons, although I imagine a major one is the cost. It can run over $1,300 a month and is not always covered by insurance. In some cases, people must stop due to nausea, vomiting, bloating, stomach pain, diarrhea and heartburn. While uncommon, hair loss, injection site reactions and gallstones can also become an issue.
The good news is that usually within a year most people reach their goal weight and can begin to taper off their use. However, while these medications are effective for weight loss, studies indicate that a significant portion of the weight lost, potentially 25% to 39%, is lean mass (muscle). This means you may experience a double whammy; increased hunger combined with less ability to metabolize the incoming calories. LISTEN UP!!! It is essential that you use the time on this medication to focus on hunger cues, regulate yourself emotionally, work on your relationship with food and incorporate exercise into your routine. Find a friend group to keep you accountable, take a walk on your lunch break with a co-worker, or locate a support group to help you navigate the rough waters of personal accountability.
It is my hope that GLP-1s will be spring board for success as you launch yourself toward a healthy, sustainable lifestyle that you can be proud of.
