Setbacks ≠ Failure
Success is not linear. Much like the stock market, progress has its ups and downs. We can all relate to a grocery store run where we forget the very thing we went there for and don't realize it until we are back at home? Or get there just to realize our list is at home? It really does feel tragic in the moment but, when time goes by and you get perspective, or when you hear someone else tell the story, isn't it kind of funny? If you have seen a health coach before that was ineffective or had a personal trainer and didn't like the experience, don't write off the whole concept. There are always a few bad apples. Keep at it!
Remember that good health is not a destination. I like the idea of our health as a garden. There are seasons. This can look like marriage, divorce, small children in the home, watching grandkids full time, health concerns, a dying parent, a job change...ect. There are also weeds. This can be any behavior you wish to modify. Sometimes it's only when a vine weed rears its ugly head over our favorite bush that we realize it was flourishing under our nose unnoticed the whole time. It reminds me of my 30's where I had all sorts of bad habits that youth took care of for me. I was lonely more evenings than not and what cures loneliness better than a late-night snack of hot tea and cookies in front of a favorite tv show? That weed was growing for a WHILE! A beautiful garden takes time and attention and with those come results. Nothing happens quickly in a garden (except deer demolishing your lillys but don't get me started on that.)
